Kolkata, India – Tidings Media and Communications, the publisher of the Bengali daily Ei Samay, has acquired the Nepali-language daily Himalaya Darpan, based in Siliguri. This marks the company's second major acquisition, following its purchase of Ei Samay from the Times Group in April 2024.
Led by advocate Sanjay Basu and entrepreneur Anurag Chaudhury, the Kolkata-based Tidings Media operates from East India House and continues to expand its presence in regional journalism.
Reaching the Nepali-speaking Community
With a circulation of 15,000, Himalaya Darpan serves Nepali-speaking populations in Sikkim, West Bengal, and Assam. Tidings Media aims to extend the publication’s reach to an estimated 60 lakh Nepali-speaking individuals, including the global Gorkha diaspora.
In a LinkedIn post, Sanjay Basu announced a ₹15 crore investment to enhance both digital and physical outreach. The funds will be used to enrich content, improve distribution, and launch new initiatives, such as a dedicated North Bengal section on its digital platform.
Basu stated, "Our investments in Himalaya Darpan and Ei Samay are not just business decisions but a tribute to the rich history of Indian languages like Nepali and Bengali. Preserving and nurturing our mother tongues ensures their legacy for future generations."
Expanding Regional Journalism
Tidings Media has already seen success with Ei Samay, including the launch of its North Bengal Edition. By acquiring Himalaya Darpan, the company seeks to deepen its connection with the Gorkha community in North Bengal, Sikkim, and beyond.
The current employees of Himalaya Darpan will remain part of the team, ensuring continuity and expertise in serving the community.
Strategic Support
Aquilaw, the legal advisory firm for Tidings Media, facilitated this acquisition, as well as the earlier purchase of Ei Samay.
This move solidifies Tidings Media's commitment to regional languages and journalism, reflecting its vision of fostering cultural and linguistic heritage while expanding its media influence.
